Days 13-15 ~ Wide Open Spaces Tour 2012 ~ Carlsbad, MN

Exploring the New Mexico desert and the Carlsbad Cavern

Lil Kevin this ones for you, we saw this chicken at our campground in Carlsbad, NM. though we already had dinner...

While on our trip from Las Cruces, NM to Carlsbad, NM we had to pass thru Texas again.
And back into New Mexico to Carlsbad

Lovin the view from the captain's chair

Wide Open Spaces...

Just another mountain

This bridge runs over a very dry river

Entering El Paso, Texas

Driving through mountain cut-throughs were common

Inspection Station ~ again  :)

Guadalupe Mountains from a distance

and up close

Apparently this mountain range must be the highest elevation in Texas

One of our fellow RVers had his sign out

Danny's Place had the Best BBQ in Carlsbad, NM

I had heard about these Caverns though they were still unbelievable

The following pictures don't do justice to these caves

We tried to show the enormacy of the space, though its difficult in a dark cave

These names were given to different shapes of stalactite & stalagmites throughout the caverns

Large Stalactites

Queen's orchestra

Crazy colors develop from dripping water

Up close view of a stalactite growing

This is how the original explorers accessed holes throughout the cave

A little history

This map shows the area of "The Big Room" it covers an area larger than 90 football fields and in some spots were 250' high

These are the bats roosting upside down on the Caverns ceiling

Unbelievable

Stalagmites growing up towards the stalactites

The water pooling under a growing stalagmite

A large stalagmite nicknamed "Rock of Ages", it's about 100' tall & 10' diameter.

Do you see the bearded mans face?

Typical landscaping in this area of the country

This viewing area is where visitors watch up to 400,000 bats exit the cave every evening at dusk

This is the natural entrance that was originally used to discover the cave back in 1898.

And is still used today, I took it and it drops 800ft in one mile of path. Pam & I originally accessed the Cavern by elevator.

Original access hole looking out from the inside.

A fire occurred in June 2011 and burned five miles radius around and leading up the the Cavern.
